Hall of fame

Dat Amerikaanse historie minder ver teruggaat dan die in Europa of Azië is natuurlijk een feit. Hun oudste steden in Oosten van het land zijn maar 400 jaar oud. Dit creëert ook een ander soort bewustzijn. Laatst kwam ik tijdens een uurtje sappen op antiques roadshow , zeg maar de Amerikaanse versie van "tussen kunst en kitch". Het gros van de aangeboden voorwerpen (honkballen, basketbal outfits, gitaren) kwam van halverwege de 20^ste eeuw. Blijkbaar een soort Amerikaans antiek. Vreemd genoeg is klassiek interieur weer veel meer de mode dat in het mijn ogen modernere Europa. Een Deense kennis die retail interieur keten runt aan beide kanten van de oceaan zegt dat zijn collecties in Europa en in Amerika helemaal niets met elkaar delen.

Rock 'n roll music hall of fame

En als je geen historie hebt kun je die maar het best zelf creëren. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan zijn de vele Hall of fame’s. Zo heb ik de Rock ’n roll hall of fame en de country hall of fame bezocht en heb ik ook wel eens over de walk of fame in LA geslenterd. Maar al reizend kwam ik er achter dat bijna elke serieuze amerikaanse stad wel een hall of fame heeft. Zo zijn er:

Hierbij zijn zelfs nog een aantal weggelaten.

Big business voor de specifieke instelling, een extra trekpleister voor de betreffende stad en ook de mogelijkheid om geschiedenis te herschrijven. En als je als artiest, atleet of ander soort VIP hier niet aan meedoet heb je blijkbaar geen waarde in historie.

Ik heb voor mijzelf nog geen hall of fame gevonden waar ik een plaatsje zou kunnen hebben. Misschien  moet ik hem zelf maar creëren. Hall of fame voor snel fietsende gitaarspelende Nederlandse expat IT ‘er met een gevoel voor ironie. It’s lonely at the top.
